Another sub-type of article is descriptive article. Similar to a narrative essay, a descriptive essay is one that describes a topic, or a range of topics, normally related to a specific region, topic, or time interval. Such essays can ask the reader to examine and compare a variety of examples of this topic–examples the writer has selected, so as to illustrate or demonstrate a specific aspect of the topic. A descriptive article will almost surely need to be much longer than a narrative one, since it won’t just request the reader to examine and compare examples of this subject, but will also probably need to persuade the reader with its own arguments.

Meta-essays are written essays that focus on the theme of the full essay. For instance, if the writer wants his readers to understand the connection between the stock market and ecological degradation, then he could write a meta-essay with this theme, along with a thesis statement describing how the market affects the surroundings, and a list of related links that research related topics. These essays complement the text, since they provide additional particulars and support the main thesis. Meta-essays are useful to a writer since they add extra information to the text, which makes it more intriguing and better to the reader.
